Wagner is usually viewed as the archetypal cad: taking money from his patrons one moment, sleeping with their wives the next. His situation in Zurich, living across the garden fence from his patrons the Wesendoncks, seems a case in point. But is it?

Iain Burnside unpeels the story of Wagner and the Wesendoncks, weaving Wagner’s music into a miniature musical drama of his own. You will never hear Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder (or Die Walküre) in the same way again.

This event is part of the Rye Arts Festival’s 50th-anniversary celebrations.
